How to Improve Machining Surface Finish

A practical CNC surface-finish guide covering feed, tool geometry, runout, toolpath, rigidity, vibration, material and tool condition.

Poor surface finish is usually the combined result of geometry and process behavior. Feed per tooth, cutter geometry, runout, toolpath, workholding, vibration, material behavior and tool condition all affect the finished surface.

Finish problem map

POOR FINISH │ ├─ Geometry → feed, radius, stepover, cusp ├─ Tool → runout, wear, edge condition ├─ Machine → chatter, spindle, axis motion ├─ Setup → workholding, overhang └─ Material → work hardening, built-up edge, burrs

The geometric component

For a simplified semicircular or ball-nose geometry, a theoretical cusp height can be estimated as:

h ≈ f² / (8R) Since D = 2R: h ≈ f² / (4D)

This is a geometric height. It is not a measured Ra value. Metrik MFG deliberately labels the result as a theoretical cusp-height estimate so users do not confuse a geometry model with actual surface metrology.

Check runout early

Runout makes some teeth remove more material than others. Check tool seating, collet condition, holder condition and spindle health before trying to force the finish with lower feed.

Toolpath and rigidity

A finishing path should avoid sudden changes in engagement where possible. Thin walls and long tool overhangs can deflect under cutting force. A stable toolpath and rigid setup are often more effective than simply reducing feed.

Symptom Likely cause First check
Regular waves Chatter/harmonic instability Rigidity, overhang, controlled speed change
Uneven marks Runout/unequal loading Tool and holder
Fine scallops Toolpath geometry Step/over and cutter radius
Burnished surface Rubbing/wear Chip load and tool edge

Practical sequence

  1. Confirm the drawing and inspection method.
  2. Inspect tool and holder.
  3. Check runout.
  4. Verify chip load, RPM and feed.
  5. Check engagement and toolpath.
  6. Check wall support and overhang.
  7. Make controlled changes.
