316 Stainless Steel
Manufacturing reference for 316 stainless steel covering density, structure, corrosion-resistance considerations, machining and applications.
316 stainless steel is an austenitic grade commonly selected where corrosion resistance is important, including marine, chemical and process-related environments.
Quick reference
| Property | Reference |
|---|---|
| Density | ≈8.0 kg/dm³ (≈0.289 lb/in³) |
| Elastic modulus | ≈200 GPa |
| Structure | Austenitic stainless steel |
| Strength | Depends on product form and condition |
Machining
Use sharp tools, adequate chip thickness, stable workholding and controlled coolant/lubrication. Avoid prolonged rubbing and dwell. Cutting data should be specific to 316 rather than copied from free-machining 303.
304 vs 316
| Consideration | 304 | 316 |
|---|---|---|
| General corrosion resistance | Very good | Very good; often chosen for harsher environments |
| Machining | Controlled cutting required | Controlled cutting; work-hardening matters |
