304 Stainless Steel
Manufacturing reference for 304 stainless steel covering density, structure, machining considerations, applications and trusted source notes.
304 stainless steel is a common austenitic grade used for corrosion-resistant components, fabrication, process equipment, food-related equipment and general engineering parts.
Quick reference
| Property | Reference |
|---|---|
| Density | ≈7.9 kg/dm³ (≈0.285 lb/in³) |
| Elastic modulus | ≈200 GPa |
| Structure | Austenitic stainless steel |
| Strength | Depends on product form and condition |
Machining
Maintain enough chip thickness to cut rather than rub. Work-hardening, runout, tool edge condition, rigidity and coolant/lubrication can materially affect the result. Avoid dwelling under rotation.
Applications
Housings, brackets, process components, fabricated assemblies, food equipment, fasteners and many general corrosion-resistant parts.
