1018 Steel
Practical reference for AISI 1018 steel covering density, typical properties, machinability, applications and CNC considerations.
AISI 1018 is a low-carbon steel used widely for general engineering and machine-shop work. The exact mechanical properties depend on product form and condition.
Cold-drawn reference example
| Property | Reference |
|---|---|
| Density | 7.87 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) |
| Elastic modulus | About 200 GPa |
| Machinability | MatWeb lists about 70% relative machinability for a cold-drawn reference condition |
| Strength | Varies with product form and condition |
Machining behavior
1018 is generally straightforward to machine compared with many harder alloy steels. Use controlled chip load, rigid workholding and the correct tooling data for the operation. Do not assume every 1018 product has the same mechanical condition.
Common uses
- Fixtures and brackets.
- General machine components.
- Pins, posts and low/moderate-duty shafts.
- Prototype parts.
