6061 Aluminum
Practical manufacturing reference for 6061 aluminum covering properties, temper, machining, applications, weight and related tools.
6061 is a widely used aluminum alloy for general engineering, CNC machining, fixtures, brackets, housings and structural components. It combines useful strength, corrosion resistance, weldability and machinability.
Quick material data
| Property | Reference |
|---|---|
| Density | ≈2.70 g/cm³ (≈0.0975 lb/in³) |
| Elastic modulus | ≈69 GPa |
| Strength | Strongly dependent on temper and product form |
| Machining | Generally machinable with carbide tooling; data depends on cutter and condition |
Temper matters
“6061” identifies the alloy family, not one universal strength condition. T4, T6, T651 and other tempers differ. The material certificate, drawing and purchase specification should control the exact condition.
Machining considerations
Use sharp aluminum-suitable tooling, provide chip clearance and avoid prolonged rubbing. Burr formation, finish and tool life depend on edge geometry, cutting data, lubrication and workholding.
Common uses
- Machined brackets and plates.
- Fixtures and tooling.
- Housings and covers.
- General CNC components.
