Metal Density Table
A practical density reference for common aluminum, steel, stainless, titanium, copper and brass grades, with units and weight-calculation guidance.
Density converts material volume into mass and is a key input for stock-weight estimates. The values below are practical reference values; use the supplier or material certificate when precision matters.
| Material | Approx. g/cm³ | Approx. lb/in³ |
|---|---|---|
| 6061 aluminum | 2.70 | 0.0975 |
| 7075 aluminum | 2.81 | 0.1015 |
| AISI 1018 steel | 7.87 | 0.284 |
| 304 stainless | 7.9 | 0.285 |
| 316 stainless | 8.0 | 0.289 |
| Titanium Grade 5 | 4.43 | 0.160 |
| Copper | 8.96 | 0.324 |
| C360 brass | ≈8.5 | ≈0.307 |
Weight relationship
Mass = Volume × Density For in³ and lb/in³: Weight (lb) = Volume × Density
Do not confuse stock weight with finished-part weight. Machining allowance, holes, pockets and scrap change actual material usage.
